Keeping seniors in the game: Coucil partners with alive & kicking hills

March 12, 2026

The Hills Shire Council has partnered with Alive and Kicking Hills to help residents aged 60 and over stay active, social and healthy through a fun and affordable community soccer program.

Alive and Kicking Hills is a local over-60s soccer group that meets every Tuesday from 8.30am at Ted Horwood Reserve in Baulkham Hills. The weekly sessions give older residents the opportunity to continue playing the game they love in a safe, friendly and welcoming environment.

Since launching in August 2025, the program has grown steadily, expanding from just eight players to around 20 regular participants a sign of the strong interest among local seniors looking to stay active and connected.

As part of the partnership, Council is supporting Alive and Kicking Hills by providing access to local playing fields and sponsorship assistance to help keep participation costs low and accessible.

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne, said Alive and Kicking Hills was a fantastic example of a grassroots initiative making a real difference in the community.

“This is a wonderful example of Council supporting programs that help our seniors stay active and connected,” Mayor Byrne said.

“Programs like Alive and Kicking Hills remove barriers to participation and make it easier for older residents to maintain their physical and mental wellbeing.

“Staying active at any age is important, and this program shows it’s never too late to get involved in sport.”

Co-founders Bill Renton and Keith Pierce said the idea behind Alive and Kicking Hills was simple to keep people moving, connected and enjoying sport later in life.

“It’s about staying active and having a laugh,” Mr Renton said.

“We have players from all walks of life, aged from 60 to over 80.

“There’s no heavy contact, no pushing and no fouls just a chance to run around, keep fit and catch up with mates over coffee afterwards.”

The program is open to anyone aged 60 and over, with participants ranging from their early 60s to their late 70s and beyond. Many are retired but remain passionate about staying fit, social and involved in their local community.
